A free seminar about Animal Care Careers will be offered to teens and adults on Thursday, September 27th, from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. at Project Self-Sufficiency. Lori Space Day, Space Farms Zoo & Museum zoologist, will be joined by Kelly Simonetti of Antler Ridge Wildlife Sanctuary and certified veterinary technician Jennie Beckman of the Animal Hospital of Sussex County for a discussion of the background and educational requirements as well as the tasks that accompany their unique professions. Live animals will be present; questions from the audience will be welcome. “Becoming You: Animal Care Careers” will touch on careers in all aspects of animal care, from veterinary technician to zoo management. The seminar is free and open to teens and adults, but registration is required.
Lori Space Day, a multi-species pediatric specialist at Space Farms Zoo & Museum, is charged with the supervision of small animals at the popular local attraction, which cares for more than 500 live wild animals including bobcats, tigers, lions, buffalo, hyena, wolves and more. Lori is steeped in the art of zoo keeping, having grown up on the 400-acre institution which was started in 1927 by her grandparents Ralph and Elizabeth Space.
Antler Ridge Wildlife Sanctuary is a 120-acre preserved farm located in Warren County. The preserve is home to many species of sick, injured or orphaned wildlife, cared for almost entirely by volunteers. The non-profit sanctuary was launched in 2004 by registered nurse Kelly Simonetti, who saw a need for an agency which would care for small mammals, such as squirrels, raccoons, fawn, opossums, skunks and other local creatures. The center rehabilitates more than 900 animals per year.
The Animal Hospital of Sussex County is a full-service veterinary hospital in Augusta. The hospital provides preventative care, along with surgery, dentistry, boarding and emergency services. Certified veterinary technician Jennie Beckman works closely with veterinarians at the clinic to provide a range of services from basic animal care to surgical assistance.
