Free Workshop about Teaching Strategies

The Family Success Center at Project Self-Sufficiency will host a free workshop, “Using Multiple Intelligences to Help Children Learn,” on Wednesday, January 25th, from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.  The presentation will be targeted to parents and educators who desire more information about the process of assessing children’s different learning styles, and creating teaching methodologies to make the most of each child’s strengths.  People learn in a variety of different ways depending upon family background and social expectations.  The different types of learning styles, identified as “intelligences” in the field of education, can include verbal, logical, visual, musical, physical, extroverted and introverted.  Identifying the way a child learns at an early age can help parents and educators tailor the child’s learning environment to make the most of that child’s abilities.

“This workshop is ideal for parents and educators who want to learn how to identify the unique gifts of children whose strengths may not have been picked up by traditional methodologies,” noted Deborah Berry-Toon, Executive Director of Project Self-Sufficiency.  “However, parents and educators of children who are having already performing well in school will also benefit from this training.”

The workshop is presented by the Statewide Parent Advocacy Network, the leading parent advocacy agency whose mission is to empower families and to inform and involve professionals and other individuals in the healthy development and educational rights of children.

Project Self-Sufficiency is a community-based non-profit organization which specializes in services for low-income families in northwestern New Jersey.  Programs offered at Project Self-Sufficiency include family literacy education, computer training and job placement services, assistance with parenting skills, childcare, counseling and advocacy, referrals, and help with emergency basic needs.

“Using Multiple Intelligences to Help Children Learn” will be offered at Project Self-Sufficiency, which is located at 127 Mill Street in Newton.  The presentation is free and open to the public, but registration is required.  Register on line at www.spannj.org/training or by calling Vivian De Witt at 973-642-8100, extension 116.
