Free Family Activities this Fall

Story Time, organized Fun Nights, and outings to the YMCA are just some of the ways that Sussex County families can spend time together this fall at the Sussex County Family Success Center operated by Project Self-Sufficiency.  The Family Success Center is designed to assist all families with attaining economic self-sufficiency and family stability.  All activities are free and most are open to members of the public, as well as Project Self-Sufficiency participants; advance registration is required.

Family Fun Nights will be offered on Fridays, October 21st and November 18th, from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at Project Self-Sufficiency.  In addition to screening classic family films, children of all ages and their parents will enjoy craft projects, games, and physical activities.  Refreshments will be served.

Thursday evening is Story Time at Project Self-Sufficiency’s Little Sprouts Early Learning Center.  Parents and their children will gather to share a story, dinner and an activity.  Separate readings will be available for children ages 3 – 6, and those ages 7 – 10.  Story Time will be offered at Project Self-Sufficiency’s Little Sprouts Early Learning Center on October 13th and 20th, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

The Sussex County YMCA will host “Friday Nights at the Y” on behalf of the Family Success Center on Fridays, October 28th and November 11th, from 6:30 – 9:00 p.m.  Family activities are geared towards parents and their children age 13 and under, including games, crafts, and swimming.  Parental supervision is required for all activities; parents are required to be in the pool with children under the age of 6, and within the pool area with children up to age 14.  Swim diapers are necessary for young children who are not yet potty-trained.  Bathing suits are required; transportation is not provided.  The Sussex County YMCA is located at 15 Wits End Road in Hardyston.

Family Success Center participants are also eligible to take computer classes, and receive employability skills training at Project Self-Sufficiency’s Career Training & Employment Center.  Upcoming activities at the Sussex County Family Success Center include the annual Halloween party, a special forum for Grandparents who are serving as Caregivers for their grandchildren, and the annual Holiday gathering in December.

The Sussex County Family Success Center at Project Self-Sufficiency is funded by a grant from the New Jersey Department of Children & Families, and operated with the assistance of the Family Success Center Parent Advisory Board.  Throughout the year, the Family Success Center offers information about health and nutrition, parenting skills training, economic self-sufficiency services, family activities, legal services, referrals, advocacy and other services.

Project Self-Sufficiency is a private non-profit community-based organization dedicated to improving the lives of low-income families residing in northwestern New Jersey.  The agency’s mission is to provide a broad spectrum of holistic, respectful, and comprehensive services enabling low-income single parents, teen parents, two-parent families, and displaced homemakers to achieve personal and economic self-sufficiency, family stability, and to improve their lives and the lives of their children.  Since 1986 Project Self-Sufficiency has served more than 19,000 families, including over 30,000 children.

All activities offered by the Sussex County Family Success Center at Project Self-Sufficiency are free and open to Project Self-Sufficiency participants and Family Success Center members.  Many events are also open to the public.  Pre-registration is required for all events.  For information about the fall activities at the Sussex County Family Success Center, to register for an event, or to find out more about the programs and services offered at Project Self-Sufficiency, call 973-940-3500.
