Help with preparing income tax returns is available at Project Self-Sufficiency for senior citizens and income-eligible Sussex County residents on Tuesdays through April 12th, between the hours of 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Tax preparers are made available through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) which offers free tax help to low- to moderate-income people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Certified volunteers sponsored by various organizations receive training to help prepare basic tax returns in communities across the country. The service is free and open to Sussex County residents who meet eligibility requirements, but registration is required.
Participants are required to bring along several documents to assist with the preparation of their tax returns, including proof of identification; Social Security Numbers; Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) assignment letters, if applicable; proof of foreign status, if applying for an ITIN; birth dates for the individual, their spouse and dependents; wage and earning statement(s) Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, from all employers; interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099); copy of 2009 federal and state returns; proof of bank account routing numbers and account numbers; and the total paid for daycare provider and the daycare provider's tax identifying number, if applicable.
Project Self-Sufficiency is located at 127 Mill Street in Newton. The tax preparation service is free and open to income-eligible Sussex County residents, but registration is required. Interested participants are encouraged to call Project Self-Sufficiency at 973-940-3500 to register.
